War Memorial Chapel and Pylons

War Memorial Chapel and Pylons

The Virginia Tech Memorial honors alumni who have lost their lives while serving in the armed forces. Grouped by class, names of Virginia Tech alumni are carved into the sides of the eight pylons. The cenotaph in the center bears the names who have been awarded the Medal of Honor.

The Pylons represent eight Virginia Tech values: Brotherhood, Honor, Leadership, Loyalty, Service, Sacrifice, Duty, and the university’s motto—Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Below Memorial Court sits War Memorial Chapel. The chapel was completed in 1960 as a tribute to those same alumni. It now serves as a place for meditation and worship for students, as well as a facility that accommodates weddings, memorial services, and military commissioning.
