Copyright Year and Minor Template Update

Feb 05, 2007, 04:33 PM

Hello everyone,

I was looking at the VT web templates the other day (because I use them too), and realized that the copyright year in the footer was still set to 2006 (!). Needless to say, it should be 2007, or the current year. So, if you haven't done so already, now's the time to change that year from 2006 to 2007.

While you're at it, you can save yourself some work down the road by removing any unit/department copyright notices in your sub-footer. The Virginia Tech copyright notice in the footer covers nearly all material within the vt.edu domain, so it is not necessary to include a second copyright notice for your unit or department in the sub-footer.

For more information on copyright, please refer to the Web Content Recommendations on the University Relations website: http://www.unirel.vt.edu/web/content.php .

Getting back to the templates, I've replaced all the 2006s with the placeholder text "Year", and updated the template instructions to include a step for changing the placeholder text to the current year: http://www.unirel.vt.edu/web/templates/instruction2.php .

There's no need to download the templates again -- I'm not even changing the version number. If you have an existing site that needs to be changed, here are some options:

  • If you're using the Dreamweaver templates, just change the copyright year in the master template, and/or remove any copyright notices in the child templates, and perform a site wide template update.
  • If you're using the Dreamweaver or HTML templates, perform a multiple file find and replace of your entire site. (Don't forget to include the templates in your search!)
  • Of course if you have access to server side technology, now might be the time to consider using server side includes. Here's a helpful article on the subject: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/ssi_lbi_template.html .
